When was morris iemma premier
The power sell-off scheme was scrambled by the opposition last week, and today its orchestrator, Michael Costa, also lost his position as treasurer as part of a reshuffle following the shock resignation of deputy premier John Watkins.
Some 20 years earlier, he began his journey with the Labor movement with the Commonwealth Bank Employees Union. A law and economics graduate, Mr Iemma's political career officially started in May when he defeated the sitting Liberal to be elected as Member for Hurstville.
The seat was abolished in , but he was preselected for the seat of Lakemba, which he has held since. He has held various portfolios in the ministry, including public works and services, sport and recreation, health, state development, and was treasurer for the first six months of his premiership.
Mr Iemma held the citizenship portfolio while premier, but his biggest tasks were dealing with ongoing government problems in health and transport and with internal party pickering. He was re-elected premier in March , after admitting to the government's failings and asking voters for more time to fix the problems. His four children play the sport. Daughter Clara plays first grade for Campbelltown-Camden and has been a member of the NSW unders for the past three years while sons Matthew, Joshua and Luca are also talented with the leather and willow.
And Iemma has enjoyed success on the coaching front, labelling his unbeaten run to Moore Shield success two years ago with the unders St George representative team, "as big a thrill as winning the election". There has been transport problems, there has been hospital problems.
He has woeful polling of late. He has been in power for three years and there has been a Labor Government in power in New South Wales for 13 years. It is now believed, it has been reported by a number of newspapers that Nathan Rees, a relatively newcomers who is currently the Minister for Emergency Services and Water, will take over as Premier and Carmel Tebbutt will be Deputy Premier. However Nathan Rees is a member of the left but he has said that if he becomes Premier he will be unaligned to stop this left right factional power play that goes on in New South Wales.
From to he was an official with the Commonwealth Bank Employees Union. He then worked as an adviser to Senator Graham Richardson who held the portfolios of environment and social security in the Bob Hawke and Paul Keating federal governments.
His slogan was: "A local who listens", and his campaign director, Tony Burke, says that "[I] don't think he has ever moved away from that". When the seat of Hurstville was abolished in , he won a tough pre-selection battle for the safe seat of Lakemba, which included part of the old seat of Hurstville.
Iemma has held Lakemba since. His tenure as Health Minister was generally free of major controversy, although he has said of the Health portfolio: "it is one of the biggest and most difficult jobs in government".
