And, yet, the Lord of Blackrock is not a mere scientist - he is a great dragon cornered in his lair. Can he truly be defeated by mortal hands? Nefarian has vowed to crush Ragnaros. To this end, he has recently begun efforts to bolster the black dragonflight, much as his father Deathwing had attempted to do in ages past. However, where Deathwing failed, it now seems the scheming Nefarian may be succeeding.
Nefarian's mad bid for dominance has attracted concern from the red dragonflight , which has always been the black flight's greatest foe. Though Nefarian's intentions are known, the methods he is using to achieve them remain a mystery. It is believed, however that Nefarian has been experimenting with the blood of all of the various dragonflights to produce unstoppable warriors, accomplishing what his father failed, the creation of the Chromatic dragonflight.
Besides the twisted dragonflight, other experiments took place in these halls, including manipulation with dragon bones and eggs. Nefarian also captured and corrupted Vaelastrasz, while his creation Chromaggus survived and guarded the lair. Due to Moira Thaurissan who sent information on Nefarian and the Dark Horde all over Azeroth, the Horde leadership in Orgrimmar learned truth about their orc brethren in Blackrock Mountain. As such, Horde heroes invaded the lair, cut through the twisted experiments and slew Nefarian in his sanctuary.
Some time after the Fourth War , SI:7 agents thoroughly investigated the lair and found references to similar experiments that may predate Nefarian. They collected the material for further study. Port in by using the Orb of Command located at the end of the hall to the right of the entrance to Blackrock Spire The attunement quest [60D] Blackhand's Command is no longer necessary and has been removed from the game.
Vaelastrasz the Corrupt. Every so often, you run across a family in Azeroth that's been led astray and corrupted by evil forces. The Barovs of Scholomance and the Redpaths of Darrowshire come to mind.
Most players are surprised to find that the final boss of Blackwing Lair, the fearsome dragon Nefarian, is the son of none other than Deathwing himself. The leader of the Black Dragonflight, Deathwing is powerful enough to literally destroy the world, so what do you think his son is like?
And you thought Onyxia was bad! Speaking of Onyxia, she appears on this list, too. Oh, we're not done analyzing the BWL family tree yet. Like a close-knit dragon mafia, Nefarian's sister is helping them out. In fact, you might say she's really the one in charge. You might have met her already, and you've likely seen her head on display in your faction's capital city.
If you're Alliance, you caught her masquerading as the Lady Prestor, a noblewoman of Stormwind, and in the throne room, no less! Onyxia is one of the most powerful and popular villains in Azerothian history, and you probably didn't know that she's Nefarian's younger sister. Similar to the Molten Core, you don't really need to be attuned to enter the dungeon, but it takes a huge chunk out of your travel time. Most players simply assume that you cant enter the dungeon without completing a quest, getting to a certain level of reputation with a particular faction, or having a physical key.
Onyxia's Lair requires a special trinket, for example, that's awarded after a long quest chain. If you aren't attuned with the Orb of Command, a shiny ball near the entrance to Blackrock Spire, you have a long trek through the dungeon ahead of you, similar to Molten Core. It's not pretty, but it's possible. To be clear, there are three "easy" bosses in Blackwing Liar while the five others are more difficult.
