Where is calf creek falls in utah
Really nice falls at the end. Lots f rocks. Trail finding in the dark oops a little challenging! Fabulous hike to spectacular falls. On return, be careful about following the trail. There are a few places where you can go astray. Well worth every step!!
Beautiful hike! Came recommended by the locals, and it did not disappoint. Fall colors made it even better. Pretty easy, enjoyable walk up a small river to a surprisingly amazing waterfall. Some Rocky canyon scenery, some open sandy bits, and some tree-shaded parts.
Nice autumn colors. Beautiful valley. The leaves are still changing and they are spectacular. It is a little over 6 miles round trip. The falls are much larger than I expected.
It's a bit chilly at the top. Lovely day! Did the trail just after sunrise and it was great timing! We had no trouble parking and saw very few people on the trail. On the way back though, there were a lot more hikers and the parking was full. So I'd recommend going early. Beautiful trail and great falls! Awesome hike. Completed on October Scenic views are all around as you walk in the creek canyon with yellow tees lit by the sun. The waterfall at the end is spectacular!!!
We had a great time on our hike today. We left about and got back about 5. We were warm in the sun, and cool in the shade. The waterfall was breathtaking and well worth it, but getting there was a great time too.
There was so much to see along the way. Trees changing color, wildflowers, fish in the river, and picturesque views around every turn. A few ups and downs, sand and some rocks. Loved it! I wish the mini map was better marked but other than that, it was great!!
Did it with a dog and he loved walking in the sand. The trail was excellent. A flat and sandy hike with a few up and down rocky sections. The falls were beautiful and well worth the distance. Keep an eye out for some cute otters in the creek along the way. Long walk not too difficult but so worth it! Probably the reason why is moderate is because of the length but not difficult at all! The falls at the end are beautiful. Nice trail. More easy than moderate. Most of trail is packed sand.
The falls are definitely worth it. I want to add that there is a bit of "rock stepping" here and there, which I haven't read in any of the reviews. Nothing huge at all. Most will have no problems with it unless like me, you have some hip issues, so I wanted to add that to the review. Astounding scenery and falls. Easy to Moderate trail depending on your fitness level. Amazing views along the hike, both the nature and pictographs!
The waterfall is astounding, oasis in the desert! Take a swim, even in the cold temperatures! Great hike with nice views from start to finish, plus an amazing waterfall at the end which is better than Upper Calf Creek Falls, IMO.
We got lucky and had stellar weather with an uncrowded trail. Even had the waterfall all to ourselves for a few minutes. The trail seems longer than 6. Regardless, this hike is worth the journey. Located at the campground in the Calf Creek Recreational Area, there is a parking fee for the parking lot, and a camping fee in order to stay overnight. The trail sets off to the north, away from the campground. Though mostly level, the trail frequently crosses vast sandy tracts that can make it difficult for some to navigate.
About a mile and a half up the canyon, on the east wall quite high up rest two Fremont granaries and a group of pictograph panels, dated to approximately AD At Stop 7 pause to view the dramatic vertical striping visible on walls on the far side of the canyon. Known as desert varnish, the stripes are actually caused by living microbes that oxidize iron and manganese found in clay minerals.
The manganese rich black stripes are the result of humid conditions while orange stripes indicate arid conditions with low manganese content. Painted with red pigment, the three large trapezoidal shape figures are located on the smooth wall near the bottom of the canyon across the canyon from the trail.
As the trail winds beside Calf Creek, look for trout or the evidence of busy beavers. Alan and I stop several times to photograph spring wildflowers or listen to bird calls. Birdwatchers will find an abundance of birds including hummingbirds, ravens, robins, peregrine falcons and spotted towhees. The premier reason for all of this effort, and the prize at the end of the trail, is located at Stop Here, Lower Calf Creek Falls tumbles ft.
Do like we did, take a seat on a fallen log near the sandy beach, enjoy a snack and take a bazillion photos. Lower Calf Creek Falls are one of the most popular attractions in the vast Grand Staircase-Escalante, or at least one of the most frequented by visitors interested in one-day hiking tours.
The main waterfall of Calf Creek Falls, which is over ft high , flows into a plunge pool in a beautiful spot where the canyon suddenly sinks. In the summer, when it gets hot, many of those who come here after a few hours of walking to take a swim in the cool water under the waterfall. The trail is a little less than 3 miles long about 6 miles round trip and normally it is good to give yourself between 3 and 4 hours to get there and come back.
The trail itself is quite simple, but some parts that require walking in the sand can be tiring and it is also one of the reasons why it is better to wear hiking shoes than sneakers, which fill up more easily with sand. In general, this route suitable for everyone, even children , but you still have to take into account the weather conditions on the day of your visit walking for hours in the sun in the middle of summer is not the best.
Along the way, you will find a large cave carved into the rock. It is a kind of granary built more than years ago that was used by the inhabitants of these canyons at the time to store their food. Another piece of evidence that confirms that the area was already inhabited many centuries ago is a petroglyph representing three human figures. What makes this trail also interesting is the wildlife that you can see.
Many different species of birds fly between these sloping rocks. In the stream, it will not be difficult to spot some beavers building a dam, while along the trail you may see a mule deer appear.
