Is it possible to replace a dashboard
Allow to cure for an hour. Sand evenly with grit wet-or-dry. Repeat until a level surface is achieved. Polish with grit wet-or-dry sandpaper.
This epoxy does not emboss well in its uncured state, and sanding may remove your efforts. The easiest is to apply a spray grain. Tiny dots of super glue, patted and dispersed with a paper towel, catalyzed with baking soda, and then sanded can also impart texture. See here. Follow with the spray grain for best results. Let each coat of spray grain dry for at least 10 minutes before applying another.
Lay the old dash face down next to the new dash. There may be parts that need to be taken from the old dash and used on the new dash. Some clips and brackets can be reused. Remove the vehicle identification number VIN tag and screw it in place on the new dashboard. Fit the new dashboard into the car. Having someone to help at this stage makes the installation easier.
Carefully fit the dashboard in position and slide it into place. Assemble the dashboard in the reverse steps of disassembly. Fit the air ducts back into the dash, replace bolts and screws, glove box, air vents, instrument cluster and steering wheel. Remember to connect plugs back into the instrument cluster before screwing it into place. Connect the battery and test everything to make sure it works.
Overfill the hole slighly. You will be sanding it down and it is better to overfill slightly than having to find out that you need to melt more polyurethane rod into the hole after you have sanded it. Use 80 grit sandpaper to sand the urethane level with the surrounding area. The urethane is very stretchy and elastic so, if you use really short strokes when you sand, it may just stretch back and forth rather than getting ground away.
A good way to prevent the back-and-forth stretching is to put your thumb on top of the sandpaper over the area that you need to sand. Then, pull the sandpaper while maintaining downward pressure with your thumb over the urethane. This is what the damaged area looks like after the urethane welding rod was sanded down. Mix some Padded Dash Filler with the cream hardener according to the instructions. Use a spreader to apply the Padded Dash Filler to the damaged area.
Allow time for the Padded Dash Filler to cure. Sand it smooth starting with grit sandpaper and then grit sand paper. This is how it looks after sanding smooth the Padded Dash Filler. Spray on Flextex VT. You may want to spray the texture coating on something else first. You will get different size texture depending on your spray gun settings and how much you reduce dilute the Flextex with lacquer thinner.
